Resource Teachers of Literacy
Dawn Cousins and Sue McMillan are the Resource Teachers: Literacy for the schools in the Dunedin cluster extending from Big Rock to Strath Taieri, to Waikouaiti, Otago Peninsula and city schools; approximately 60 schools.
Their role is to support teachers and identified students whose literacy progress is of concern. They are committed to promoting best practices backed by reliable evidence and inform teachers of up-to-date research in literacy instruction to ensure all students receive appropriate instruction. Currently they support students from Y1 to Y8 directly and indirectly.
Both teachers have completed training in the IMSLE (Institute for Multi-Sensory Language Education) programme and are qualified to facilitate teacher training in the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA). Additionally, they have attended workshops on DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills), ensuring that they bring a comprehensive skill set to their work in literacy.
If you have identified students who may benefit from additional literacy support, or if you need assistance in enhancing your literacy programme, please do not hesitate to make contact. A referral form can be accessed by clicking here.
