Curriculum Insights and Progress Study is the new name for Aotearoa New Zealand’s national monitoring study, which tracks student progress and achievement across the motu. It builds on the legacy of NMSSA and NEMP, and is run by the

University of Otago and the New Zealand Council for Educational Research, under contract to the Ministry of Education. Otago has been home to this important work

since 1995, and we’re proud of its southern roots. It’s now a truly collaborative, nationwide effort with teams based in Ōtepoti Dunedin and Te Whanganui-a-Tara

Wellington. Each year, we work with over 6,000 students in Years 3, 6, and 8 from around 160 schools to help build a national picture of student learning. The insights we gather support the Ministry of Education, schools, and teachers to improve outcomes for all ākonga.

We’re incredibly grateful to the kaiako, tumuaki, and ākonga who take part, and we support participating schools with koha, funding for relievers, and customised reports on their students’ achievement. Early findings will be released soon—including our Insights for Teachers series, designed to support classroom teaching and learning.

We’re also looking for Kaiako Rangahau | Teacher Researchers to join our Term 3 team—a great opportunity for practising teachers to step out of the classroom and
