Finding Our Way

Nicola Eka —

Zone Orienteering Day 2022

It was a sunny day and we were all really excited to go orienteering. All 80 of us!

The bus slowly lumbered along the route to Blockhouse Bay Reserve, while the cars arrived with a lot of time to spare.

When we arrived at the reserve, the boy teams played around on the playground, whilst the girl teams waited for their start and learnt how to use the control tags/use the map.

After roughly 30 minutes, the boys lined up in our teams and had to wait another 10 minutes before we could start. A great tip was to point the blue arrows on the map to the sun, so because we had no compass, the blue lines were our navigators for a while.

It was great fun as we went along the track trying to find the controls. I don’t think anyone escaped from people asking “Are you on Course 3?” or “Do you know where Number 79 is???”. The controls were placed in areas which you could not find unless you were properly looking for them - USING THE MAP. When we came back, we were all breathing heavily. The final tag and the taped area was the last checkpoint.

As we rested on the playground, we checked our results and ate our food. Lunch? Morning tea? No one knows…
