Zone Orienteering

Maria Kroonenberg —

On Tuesday 28 May, in between blue skies and a few scattered showers, a group of 77 keen Year 5 and 6 orienteerers headed to Monte Cecilia Park to compete in Zone Orienteering.

Teams of up to six used maps to help navigate themselves around the park following different marked courses. There were plenty of smiles, alot of mud and some pretty speedy times. Here’s what a few of our orienteerers had to say:

“Suddenly my group was at the starting line. We put on our finger things that looked like doctor equipment. Goooo! We went fast as lightning and in the end my time was 30.01 minutes - and I didn’t get disqualified.” Zeno
“It was fun because it was a little bit challenging but I could still find the right numbers.” Lime
“The last bit was easy as the controls were close together, but I used the map to work out where the paths split to find the others. It was brilliant.” Viyan
“The best part was running looking for clues. We had a finger scanner that I had to put into the control points and it went beep.” Ariel
“It was fun and challenging to find all the checkpoints. I’m kinda sad that I missed one but hopefully I’ll get to do it at intermediate.” Niko

“I liked running around the park, mainly getting lost. We were taught how to use the electronic device and how to wear it. After bolting off from the start line, I immediately got lost in 10 minutes.” Hunter W
