Samoan Language Week 2021

Shannon Hardwick —

Sunday 30th May – Saturday 5th June

Talofa lava Parents,

We will be celebrating Samoan Language Week at Three Kings School in week 5.

Why do we celebrate Samoan Language Week at Three Kings School?

  • There are 3.9% (19) students who identify as Samoan at Three Kings School
  • The Samoan Language is the third most spoken language in New Zealand.
  • To raise awareness of the Samoan language as a language spoken by a significant number of people in New Zealand
  • To involve and encourage our Samoan Parents, children and staff to take part in our learning programmes.
  • To promote initiatives to maintain and grow the recognition, learning and use of the Samoan language in the home, in education, work, government, media, sports, arts, church and in the community.

Theme for 2021

This year’s theme for Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa – Samoa Language Week 2021 is ‘Poupou le lotoifale. Ola manuia le anofale which means strengthen the posts of your house, for all to thrive.

‘When you’re building a foundation for a fale (house) it can’t have a weak foundation or posts. This is the same for the foundations of our families, schools and churches that play an important role in strengthening Gagana Samoa (The Samoa Language). Language is important for the foundations of our overall wellbeing.

Fa’afetai tele lava.
