Celebrating Matariki 2022

Nicola Eka —

Matariki is an abbreviation of ‘Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea (‘The eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea’)

To launch a week of learning and discovery around Matariki the Three Kings Kapa Haka led a whole school assembly on Monday 20 June which included a stunning Karanga led by Havana (excuse the wonky video!). This was the first performance for this years Kapa Haka group and it was great to see them speak with mana. A huge thanks to Whaea Annie, Miss Kettle and Whaea Lousie for running extra morning rehearsals in the weeks prior and helping everyone get stage ready on the day.

The assembly was a beautiful reminder of the significance of Matariki and set the tone for a week of exciting and engaging activities including learning the history and tikanga of each of the stars.

Later the same day a group of 20 Kapa Haka members headed across to Mt Roskill library where they shared the importance of Matariki with a small crowd of library visitors.
