Waitangi Day our National Day 6th February

Bernice Mata'utia —

Did you know?

Waitangi Day is the national day of New Zealand held on the 6th February and marks the anniversary of the initial signing of the Treaty of Waitangi which is regarded as New Zealand’s founding document. The Treaty is an agreement, in Maori and English that was made between the British Crown and 540 Maori Rangatira (chiefs).

Why do we celebrate this day?

The 6th February is a significant day for all New Zealanders where we recognise the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi as the nation’s founding document. There are ceremonies which take place at Waitangi and around Aotearoa New Zealand to commemorate the signing of the treaty.
