Kowhai Hangi

Kowhai Teachers —

Watch our video of the children singing as the hangi goes down, look at all our photos and read the children's work.

The Hangi by Poppy McGill, Room 9

Excitement fizzed around me as the parent helpers and experts scraped the soil off the Hangi with their shovels. Steam billowed up into the sky. Murmurs burst out. As the adults carefully but quickly, pulled the wet cloths off the food a sudden delicious smell burst from underneath the cloths and ran around wildly. It brushed past first, but luckily they didn't succeed. Our class was next. Brody was selected to play. And then I was hungrily selecting food , and soon I was stuffing my face with stuffing. It was so good!!! There was onion, a hint of of herbs, but mostly bread. After that I grabbed the meat and ripped it apart with my teeth. It was delicious!

TKS Hangi by Milla McLean, Room 9

We were all pushing and and shoving to get to the front as we gathered around the hangi pit. I was really curious and enthusiastic to see how the men were going to cook the Hangi. I glued my eyes, I had no idea what they were going to do to the Hangi pit. About 2 minutes later still my eyes glued to the Hangi pit, I heard someone shout "they're about to put the hangi baskets in". I watched, entertained, as the men lowered each Hangi basket in to the pit where the hot volcanic rocks were. Woosh! Steam rushed out from all sides of the pit, all of a sudden it was like being in Rotorua again. I started getting a little confused though when I saw the men layering the hangi baskets with some sheets. Soon I realize that the men must be covering it up up so none of the heat could escape. So I watched as they layered the Hangi pit with different types of materials.
