Principal Update - Week 9, Term 1

Kate Hassall —

Kia ora whanau, talofa aiga, hi everyone, This is a short week so we are publishing our newsletter slightly earlier than normal.

Only 3 weeks until the end of the term and with the Easter break upon us these last few weeks are going to fly by!

Non-uniform day this Thursday (tomorrow) - gold coin donation please.

After the fire that destroyed homes in Loburn, and the impact other fires in our area have had, we thought it would be fitting to hold a non-uniform day to raise money for our emergency service heroes. Living rurally means that we can be more vulnerable in an emergency so we want to show our support and gratitude to all the wonderful people that work in the emergency services. We ask that all of our tamariki dress as one of our emergency heroes and bring a gold coin to donate to these amazing services. Thank you very much for your support.

Early Assembly tomorrow - 2.15pm

Due to the Easter Raffle draw and the Easter Egg Hunt for our tamariki we will hold an earlier assembly tomorrow.  See you at 2.15.

A shout out to Home and School and all the parent helpers

A huge thank you to Home and School for organising the Easter Raffle. We look forward to the winners being announced at our assembly tomorrow. A huge thank you also for providing all the children with a hot chocolate treat for lunch tomorrow and for organising the easter eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt after assembly. Your kindness is much appreciated.

Yr 4-8 Kapahaka group performance in Rangiora

Our Year 4-8 Kapa Haka group has been invited to perform at a Music Festival to be held at the Trinity Methodist Church in Rangiora on Saturday 6th April at 10am. Tickets are $10 if you would like to come and support them. A notice will be sent out after Easter to the families of children performing at the festival. All the very best for your performance. We know you will do us proud!

Science and Sustainability session for Kowhai

Check out the article in this newsletter about the Science and Sustainability session Max and Louisa ran with Kowhai. It is fantastic to have Louisa and Max offering these opportunities to our ākonga, broadening their experiences with science and sustainability in our kitchen, and in our backyard.

Summit Challenges

At Tihiraki North Loburn School our Year 4-8 children have summit challenges to complete over the course of the year which form part of our home learning programme. The summit challenges align with our vision of ‘nurturing well rounded citizens of the future with a lifelong passion for learning’. Each Yr 4-8 child is expected to complete 10 summit challenges, and if they do, at the end of the year they will be awarded a Summit Challenge badge. Last week Edith (Year 4) showed Mrs Green and myself a book review she had completed in poster form for the library. She has also chosen to donate this book to the library. This is an excellent example of a ‘Giving to Others’, and ‘Academic’ summit challenge. Tumeke Edith!

To keep on track we encourage all Yr 4-8 ākonga to complete three summit challenges before the end of Term 1. Now is a good time to check in with your child to see how they are progressing towards this goal.

Reports on your child's progress and achievement in reading and writing

Our teachers have been busy gathering information and completing reading and writing reports which will be published to you on Hero in Week 11. These reports will be followed up with whanau/teacher interviews in week 2 of term 2. Please take the time to read your child’s report and share it with them over the holiday break.

Please support the Rotary Fundraiser

In this newsletter there is a poster advertising spring bulbs for sale which is a Rotary fundraiser. Rotary supports families to provide learning resources and experiences for their tamariki, through their ‘Ready to Learn’ fund. Please support the Rotary Club of Rangiora by purchasing spring bulbs, if you are able to. Thank you.

Long Easter weekend ahead!

It is not often that Easter falls within the term so some of you may or may not be aware that the Easter holiday includes Easter Friday, Easter Monday and Tuesday. School returns as normal on Wednesday the 3rd of April.

Enjoy the long weekend, and make sure you take time for yourself and your whānau.

Take care,

Ngā mihi nui
