REACH Ski Trip - Porters Ski Field 2022
On Tuesday the 23rd of August the Year 7 and 8 children...
from Totora class were up bright and early putting on layers of clothing in anticipation of a cold winter's day at Porters Ski Field. After driving through fog as thick as pea soup, we soon gained altitude and were greeted with the most calm, warm and spectacular weather. Layers were peeled off and the sunscreen was passed around.
Showing fantastic patience and manners, everyone was fitted with their skis or snowboards. To some, the unfamiliar feeling of ski boots was discovered along with the experience of having one or two big planks attached to your feet and sliding down a slippery hill. Many laughs were had in the initial stages as most of the class bumbled into their lessons and at times each other.
The great thing about snow sports is that no matter what ability you are, there's always room for improvement. As the day wore on, we were witness to amazing perseverance and courage from all the children as they endeavoured to improve their skills. Speed increased and control fluctuated as the smiles painted pictures of happiness and achievement.
Through sports, passions are found and friendships are formed. Our Year 7 and 8’s became a tighter cohort through the shared enthusiasm for the sport and their encouragement for each other. We do apologise if your children are now hounding you to head up the slopes next weekend or more regularly.
Many thanks to all the parents and whanau who were able to come along, provide transport and support our children. Without you, these wonderful experiences would not be able to happen.
