Menger Sponge

Lois Pettigrew —

The students of Totara had fun last Friday learning about Fractals. These are self-similar patterns or shapes that you see each time you zoom in on an object.

The Menger Sponge was first constructed by Karl Menger in 1926. We created ours using business cards. Six business cards created one cube. By making sure the tabs were on the outside we folded the business cards and slotted them together to form a cube. These outside tabs could then be used to connect 20 small cubes into one cube with void space inside. 20 of these larger cubes were then slotted together to create the Menger Sponge. By gluing special cladding on the outside we created a Level 6 Menger Sponge - an object with self-similarity over six scales! It took a lot of folding, shaping and connecting but with patience and great team work we achieved it!
