The Aoraki Athletic Sports were held in ideal conditions at the Aorangi Stadium track on Wednesday 14 March.

Timaru Boys’ performed strongly at the meet and claimed numerous titles. A highlight came in the 4x100 metre relays at the end of the programme where TBHS won all of the 4 grades.

In the Minor (under 14 Boys) grade, Isaac Simpson (100 metres), Jackson Ross (discus), Reuben Bowen (High Jump), and Harry Schmack (Long Jump), claimed titles.

In the Junior (under 15 Boys), Ryan Bagrie was a stand-out in the middle distance events, easily winning the 800-1500 metres double. Shannon Drake was the other star performer claiming an unusual double in the Shot-put and High Jump. Quinn Motley (Discus) was the other athlete to claim an individual title.

The Rawlins twins William and Peter were to the fore in the Under 16 Boys events. William claiming the 200-400 metre events, while Peter chased home St Kevin’s College’s talented Max Yanzick in the 1500 and 3000 metre events. Peter's time in the 3000 metres would have broken the existing record eclipsed by Yanzick.

In the Senior (under 19 Boys) grade, TBHS was especially dominant. Bailey Gebbie won the 400-800 metre double as well as the triple jump. Ben Sewell was victorious in the 110 metre Hurdles and Long Jump, while Taiyo Wantanabe claimed the field event double of Javelin and Shot put. George Guerin put in a strongly controlled run to record a decisive win in the 1500 metres.

These boys now go forward to the South Island Secondary Schools Championships to be held in Timaru this weekend 23rd-25th of March.
