Football Shining Light of CBHS Exchange

TBHS —

Christchurch Boys’ High School proved superior in their annual winter sports exchange with Timaru Boys’ High School taking out the exchange by 6.6 to 1.5.

The TBHS senior and junior football teams were to the fore however with a draw and a win respectively.

The 1st XI Football team struggled initially, going down 2-0 early to a dominant CBHS team. Timaru struck back with two well taken goals to Ben Deeley to make the score 2-2 after a hectic 10 minutes. The first half continued at the same frenetic pace with the teams going into half time with the teams tied at 4-4 with Deeley completing his hat trick and Ross Godwin being rewarded for his high work rate with a goal.

The pace of the game settled down in the second half with TBHS taking the lead after 20 minutes, with a goal to Cam Anderson. Christchurch Boys’ equalised soon after and despite having a couple of opportunities, Timaru were unable to finish the game off. This was a good result for the Timaru side and was a good indicator of where they stand prior to their national qualifiers.

The 2nd XI Football team could not match their top team and were disappointingly beaten 8-1 with Ben Sewell working hard in the second half to try and even things up.

The Junior Football team were the stars of the day with a well taken 4-2 win in an even game. The Timaru side were more clinical in front of goal with Bailey Chambers, Carter Brewer, George McAleer and Peter Rawlins finding the back of the net. Rawlins goal in particular was impressive with a header finding the top corner as he fell away under the challenge of a CBHS defender. Rawlins and Lucas Wood were the stand out players of the day.

The 2nd XV Rugby team put up a strong fight against the CBHS 3rd XV with the game going down to the wire as Timaru Boys’ camped on the Christchurch Boys’ try line for the last 5 minutes of the game in an attempt to tie the game. CBHS took out the win 24 17. Hayden McNulty was a stand out with 2 tries and a very clinical display in the back line. Hamish Schmack, Marcel Meyer and Josh Lines also put on creditable displays.

The Colts were well outplayed by their Christchurch counterparts with a comprehensive 92 17 loss. Damian Hondelink starred with two good tries.

The 1st XI Hockey team struggled against a quality opponent with an 8-1 loss. This is the first quality opposition the team has come up against this year and the team struggled against the superior skills of their opposition. Jacob Parker was the goal scorer and William Sharp the stand out player.

The Golf team were up against it with Christchurch Boys’ fielding a very strong team and the final 4-0 loss was a reflection of the strength of the teams.
