Timaru take overall honours in Waitaki exchange

The 141st unbroken year of interschool exchanges with Waitaki Boys took place this year on August the 23rd in beautiful spring like conditions in Oamaru.

In the historic 1st XV fixture Waitaki dominated the 1st half using the ball well to earn a 24-7 advantage at the break. Timaru rallied in the 2nd half led by young forwards Tui Latu and Luke O’Connor but Waitaki deserved their 36-29 victory to win the Sel O’Neill Shield for the first time since 2015. The Under 16 and Under 14 matches were both won by Timaru 57-20 and 33-22 respectively.

Both the 1st XI and Junior Football matches were hard fought affairs played at Milner Park. The 1st XI were in control of their match but were made to work for their 2-0 victory as were the juniors who won 1-0. Both these sides now head off to Tournament week.

The Waitaki Senior Basketball side shot well from the three-point perimeter to upset TBHS 79-75. The TBHS Junior side controlled their match throughout in a comfortable 80-50 win.

The 1st XI Hockey match saw the Timaru squad win 6-3 while the Junior game was a resounding 11-0 win to TBHS. Waitaki took the honours in both the Smallbore and Trapshooting 258-256. The Debating was the reverse with TBHS taking the Senior Debate 264-262 and the Junior 341-287. Timaru were also victorious in the Chess 8-1 and Badminton 4-2.

This saw TBHS take overall honours 11-4.
