Football Finale

TBHS —

The final whistle has blown on what was a very successful season for Timaru Boys’ High Football both on and off the field.

We have had over 100 boys turning out for Timaru Boys’ on a weekly basis, playing in six different teams in three different grades.

The season has proved that there is excellent depth coming through from the junior grades with the three TBHS 14th Grade teams performing well during the season and showing excellent improvement as the season progressed. We were fortunate to win both the league competition and have the TBHS Blue team named as South Canterbury Junior Team of the year. These teams were very well coached by Taylor Donaldson and Henry Baxter (TBHS White), Jason McCone (TBHS Navy) and Todd Burtenshaw (TBHS Blue).

The South Canterbury 18th Grade competition was very strong this year and our two TBHS teams showed that they could match it with several 1st XI teams from around the region. TBHS White, mentored and coached by Mr Ross Stevenson, had some excellent results throughout the season with a win against Roncalli/Thistle being their highlight.

TBHS Blue finished third in the league which was an excellent result, considering the age of the players in the team and their individual development throughout the season. Michael Plows did an excellent job managing and coaching the boys throughout the season.

The 1st XI had a very pleasing season, gaining an impressive 8 points in the local league and playing a very nice brand of football, they had two wins and two draws during the league competition. In the South Canterbury Men’s Cup Competition, the team qualified for the final for the second year. This was a great achievement and recognition for the hard work they put in over the season. Unfortunately, they lost the final 9-3 to a very strong Hearts team that has dominated the competition for the past 30 years. The 1st XI travel to the Jim Wishart Football Tournament where we wish them all the best. The team was well led by Harry Pierce and Tom Baxter as Co-Captains, coached by Conor MacFarlane with Ms Bastings as Manager.

Many boys have achieved further honours in representing South Canterbury as representatives and have their tournaments in October; all the best for these competitions.

Huge congratulations to Taylor Donaldson (pictured right) and the TBHS Blue 14th Grade team who were winners in the South Canterbury Football Awards held on 29 August. Taylor was named as the Junior Footballer of the year and the 14th Grade Blue team were named as Junior Football team of the year.

A big thank you to both the boys, caregivers, coaches and managers who put in countless hours over the season as without your support, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the beautiful game of football.

All the best to those boys who are moving on at the end of the year. We thank you for your contribution to Timaru Boys’ High School Football over the years and we wish you all the best for your future.
