Making quite a difference in South Dunedin

Kelly Hamer —

Liam Arthur (TBHS 2012-2016) and partner Jackie Bannon have developed a pioneering Dunedin eatery to provide healthy meals to the community at a minimal cost and have now gained global recognition and a financial boost.

The Bowling Club (you bring a bowl) offers meals for as little as $4. Their unique model  encourages those able to pay to cover the cost of their meal and someone else’s. They are serving up to 900 meals a night.

The Bowling Club was  announced as one of four New Zealand businesses to win $20,000 from the Xero Beautiful Business Fund. The Caversham-based eatery was also recognised as a global winner and will receive an additional $50,000 - bringing its total to $70,000.

‘Anyone can come here and afford to have a meal and a chat’ said Liam, ‘we want to develop a real sense of belonging’.

The international award will enable the socially conscious pair and their 14 strong team to  continue to deliver quality inexpensive food at their South Dunedin eatery.
