Owen and Carl
Owen Marshall [Jones] (TBHS 1955-59) and Carl Shuker (TBHS 1988- 92) received acclaim as leading NZ literary figures in the Listener in early November.
Owen Marshall has received a fulsome range of honours over the past several decades. His latest publication is ‘New Stories’ [2024] . The Listener’s review noted ‘… he anchors these new stories in the thwarted dreams and aspirations of the aimless young, resigned middle age and the lonesome elderly.’ Classic Owen Marshall.
His short story ‘Coming Home in the Dark’ [1995] was adapted as a ‘very dark’ film in 2021.
Carl Shuker’s most recent novel ‘The Royal Free’ is his sixth. Living in Wellington these days Carl has established himself in the top echelon of New Zealand novelists.
His recent released novel has been described as ‘raising compelling issues’. Another reviewer wrote of ‘The Royal Free’, ‘ ..an exuberant, dark, wildly entertaining novel about death and copy writing’.
Carl’s novel ‘A Mistake’ published in 2019 and has been adapted for the screen. It is one of the NZ films to receive widespread praise on release this year.
