Rector's message - June 2016

Our next Board has been elected. This resets it for a new and expansive period of good service and governance on behalf of our community. We are grateful to all of the parents who stood for election, and those who cast votes to select our Parent Trustees. 

Congratulations go to elected parent representatives: Virginia Callaghan, Graham Sharp, Peter Stayt, Bernadine Reynolds and Shane Edwards. We look forward to their valued contributions in the months to come.

Other new developments are found in our world of music. Two new Timaru Boys’ and Timaru Girls’ combined ensemble groups have commenced to rehearse weekly, with an exciting new chamber orchestra, and jazz band, formed. We also have a new lunchtime choir adding to the musical repertoire, while inter-House competition singing is being rejuvenated too.

Summer may seem a distant memory given recent weather, but its sport was celebrated at the 2016 Summer Sports Prizegiving on 1 June. An impressive group of boys crossed stage to be awarded and recognised for their achievements - each prize is a nod to our heritage as well as to current sporting excellence.

Staying with sport, although winter sport, players in Junior Basketball, U14 Football, First XI Football, Colts Rugby, Second XV Rugby and First XV Rugby should be pleased with their well-deserved wins in the exchange against St. Andrew’s College this week. The First XV lifted the TBHS-STAC Milliken-Williams Cup and Moascar Cup (a coveted national trophy) in the final minutes; a truly epic clash and milestone for our school. We now look forward to playing Otago Boys’ across the codes next week at home.

It was tremendous to meet a full Hall of Year 7 and 8 parents at the Information Evening on 2 June. Some visitors added to their understanding of Timaru Boys’, gained from the Open Day in March, or previous connection to us. Others, in first contact with our staff, PTA, Board, and students, were introduced to the school with new knowledge. The best part of the Evening was again the Year 9 speakers and video montage produced by Year 13, to reveal the ‘life and times’ of TBHS, and student perceptions of their education. A cup of tea and conversation wrapped up this enjoyable and informative gathering nicely.

Another successful student-focused and promoted initiative was the SADD (Students Against Dangerous Driving) presentation at Assembly on 15 June. Spearheaded by Ethan Grimmer, it raised awareness of dangers and fatalities on the road - with wise advice given. The boys were encouraged to respect the road and its users, and to develop their driving well.

A final plug for our new Facebook page. Thank you to everyone in our community who is following our school page to track and express support, for the multitude of activities and stepping-stones we are posting increasingly. The Facebook page, in combination with our website, really does demonstrate the plethora of possibilities open to our boys for their growth and enrichment. It’s beginning to capture more and more of the moments when we’re at our best. Check it out if you haven’t lately!
