Twenty two Timaru Boys’ High students entered the 2018 Sanford Science and Technology Fair which was judged on Wednesday 12 September. They spent the afternoon at Caroline Bay Hall speaking with the judges about their investigations. Well done to all of you who entered.

The following boys helped with judging the Year 7 and 8 section: Ethan Bowmar, Bryn Houghton, Flynn Parker, Nick Cummings, Ryan Greenslade, Cole Melhopt and Neil Paver. The Science Fair committee appreciated the effort that these boys put in and the way they represented their school.

Junior Section

We had a good number of boys gain great prizes this year. In the Year 9 and 10 section, eight boys gained prizes.

In the Intermediate Individual Science category, Reuben Bowen Year 9 received a BRONZE award with his project entitled: Banana Breakdown. Nicos Shearer Year 9 received a SILVER award for his project entitled: Take half and leave half.

The following boys received awards in the Technology Open section: Ross McCulloch Year 9 with his project: Fire the Fire, Neil Meyer Year 10 for his project entitled: Speed of Light and Thomas Corbett Year 10 with his project entitled: Possum lures - what's best?

Nathan Harbutt Year 10 for his project: Nitrate fixing with Woodchips, gained a SILVER award in the Intermediate Science Individual category and a Technology Open award. Balkrishna Uniyal Year 10 for his project: Swing Chaps gained a GOLD award in the Intermediate Science Individual category and a Technology Open award.

Sam Wilson Year 9 for his project entitled: Pivots vs Roto-Rainers, gained a BRONZE award in Intermediate Science Individual category, a Technology Open award as well as an ECAN (Environment Canterbury) award.

Senior Section

George Mulder Year 11 entered his investigation entitled What's the best pasture growth provider in winter? winning a SILVER award in the Senior Science Individual category as well as the Otago University Hands on Science Prize. George placed Second Overall in the Fair.

Bailey Lissington Year 12 entered his investigation entitled: Without a Drought, winning not only a GOLD award in the Senior Science Individual category, a Technology Open award, and a NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) award but placing FIRST overall in the Fair.

The Science Department is very pleased with the effort and skill these boys have shown in carrying out and presenting their investigations. They can be extremely proud of themselves and be assured that they have a bright future in the Science field if they so choose.
