Year 13 History Trip

History —

Year 13 History recently went on a three day field trip to Akora to help students research different aspects of settlement in Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula area.

The Year 13 History class left for Akaroa on Sunday 17 May after the completion of TGHS Open Day. We travelled in the school vans with Mr Dawson and Ms Robinson and stayed at the Top 10 camp in Akaroa. The purpose of the trip was for research on an aspect of the rich history of Akaroa for use in an internal assessment for NCEA Level 3 History.

Monday morning we started at the Akaroa Museum where students were provided with lots of opportunities to learn about the history of the area. By the end of the first day students were all very tired having made the most of their opportunities to find out about the history of the area.

Tuesday morning saw us meet up with a local guide, Marie Haley, who is a direct descendant from one of the first French migrants. Marie took us to local sites of interest and explained her perspectives of events in Akaora's history. Just before we left students had a last opportunity to visit the museum and pick up on any missed pieces of information.

It was a great trip and students had a fantastic opportunity to engage in some learning outside the classroom.
