Timaru Girls' High School Swimming and Athletics Day

Janelle Amalfitano —

Term 1 has started with two main house events, our swimming sports and athletics day!

The Timaru Girls' High School Swimming Sports was held on Friday 16th February at the Timaru Boys' High School pool.

We witnessed great races from our competitive swimmers across the day along with big participation numbers in our house events.

Rata was strong in the pool again in 2024 taking out both the junior and senior inter-house relays and accumulating big house points in the participation and championship events. This year Ngaio took out the top spot for best singing and best house banner.

Timaru Girls' High School Athletics Day 2024

We all held our breath as the weather forecast was not looking in our favour a day out from our annual school athletics on Monday 4th March.  With every weather app studied over the weekend, we felt confident we would be good to go come Monday and apart from a forecast shower of rain at 8.00am the day turned out brilliant with sun all day!

Participation numbers were high with plenty of smiles and fun had by the girls along with some hard-fought results for those battling for championship titles on the track and in the field events.

Our Tug of War house event was hotly contested by the four houses at lunch time with Rata coming out on top in the Junior competition and Konini taking top honours in the Senior Competition. The inaugural TGHS race walk was also held during lunch time with 160 girls competing in the one lap track walk to earn those sought after points for their house.

Form class relays, house relays and the Teachers v Year 13s v Hostel v Internationals were the last events of the day with some blistering times around the track by our relay runners. Congratulations to Ngaio who won the Inter-house relay cup for 2024.

The Christine Chastle Cup is always a favourite on the day with the 8 fastest girls over 100m squaring off in the one-off race. Congratulations to Bella Thin who took out the race in 2024. Bella also won the Christine Chastle Cup in 2021, 2022 and 2023! We are currently checking the archives to see if this could be a record at Timaru Girls' High School.  Amazing result from Bella!
