TGHS Careers Department

Jo Shaw —

We have had a great start to the year with students participating in a number of exciting career events.

Term 1 Highlights

Highlights of Term 1 included the recent visit from the New Zealand Defence Force. This included a number of personnel from across the Army, Navy & Air Force, who spoke about the vast range of career pathways and other opportunities within their services. Our students enjoyed listening to their stories of humanitarian work, overseas deployments and camaraderie.

Our Year 9 students have started the “Become” (https://www.become.me/#/) careers programme one period per week. We are very fortunate to be part of this pilot which has been rolled out to approximately ten schools around New Zealand. It is a student centred approach to careers education, designed to broaden students personal awareness and aspirations as they begin to navigate their future pathways. The programme is being facilitated by Mrs Shaw and Mrs Lissington.

The Liaison Officers from Ara Institute of Canterbury and Otago Polytechnics, along with UC, Victoria, Auckland, Lincoln and Otago Universities have either visited us in person or online.
