Music Department Update – A Strong Start to the Year

Mrs McNally —

It has been a vibrant and energetic start to the year in the Music Department, with students throwing themselves into rehearsals, lessons and performance opportunities.

Choir – The Big Sing 2026

We are thrilled to share that over 75 students have applied to join our Choir this year. Rehearsals are already underway as we begin preparing for The Big Sing, and the sound developing in the room each week is incredibly exciting.

If you have been thinking about joining — it is not too late. We welcome committed students who are ready to contribute positively and work towards something special together. This is shaping up to be a powerful year for choral music at our school. Please email me if you would like to join: mmcnally@timarugirls.school.nz

Bands & Ensembles

Thank you to the many students signing up for lunchtime band and ensemble rehearsals. It takes initiative to show up consistently and build something as a group — and that effort matters.

A special acknowledgement goes to our student leaders who have stepped up to organise groups, support younger musicians and model rehearsal discipline. Leadership in music builds confidence, resilience and collaboration — skills that extend far beyond the rehearsal room.

Senior Music Students

Congratulations to our Level 1, 2 and 3 Music students who are approaching their coursework with commitment and maturity. The rehearsal spaces are focused, productive and creative. It is inspiring to see students taking ownership of their learning and aiming for excellence in both performance and composition. We are also happy to have the Level 1, 2 and 3 music students from Timaru Boys High School join us this term for their music tuition.

Itinerant Music Scheme

Our Itinerant Scheme lessons are now fully organised and underway. We are fortunate to work with a fantastic team of specialist teachers and are proud to have all positions filled. Welcome back:

  • Russell Fleming – Bass

  • Margaret Van Ginkel – Trumpet, Trombone and Drums

  • Tim Bower – Flute, Clarinet and Saxophone

  • Tim McLeod – Voice and Violin

  • Robyn Brien – Piano

  • And a warm welcome to Simon Lusby, who joins us this year teaching Guitar

Instrumental lessons are a valuable extension of classroom learning, and we encourage students to attend consistently and practise between lessons to make the most of these opportunities.

There is something special building in Music this year — energy, focus and a genuine sense of purpose. Thank you to our students for their enthusiasm and to our community for continuing to support music education. We are proud of the culture being created and excited for what lies ahead.
