Eco Youth Group South Canterbury
Five keen Timaru Girls’ High School students attend an Eco Youth Group South Canterbury Hui to learn all about native plants and landscape architecture.
On Wednesday 22 May, five Timaru Girls’ High School students embarked on an exciting eco-adventure at the South Canterbury Eco Centre. The event was facilitated by the dedicated Eco Youth Group South Canterbury, with expert presentations from Felicity McMillan of Arowhenua Native Nursery and landscape architect Kirsten Wilson.
During the event, students delved into the fascinating world of native plants. Felicity McMillan shared her extensive knowledge about the various types of native plants and the important work being done at the Arowhenua Native Nursery. Kirsten Wilson provided valuable insights into landscape planning, emphasizing key considerations for successful plantings.
A highlight of the evening was the hands-on activity where students had the opportunity to pick different plants and plan new plantings around the Eco Centre. This practical experience not only enhanced their understanding of native flora but also allowed them to have some fun working together.
We are proud of our enthusiastic participants: Mazaiah Isaako Tuala, Leah Crawford, Shion Asahina, Marielle Valeriano, and Yui Nakamoto. Their active engagement and eagerness to learn made the evening a great success.
The evening was a wonderful blend of education and practical experience, inspiring our students to appreciate and take part in environmental conservation efforts. We look forward to more such enriching experiences in the future!
