Gateway 2022

Jo Shaw —

Timaru Girls’ High School would like to extend a huge thank you to the businesses who have supported us by having Gateway students for work experience. 26 students have been out on placement this term.

Students have thoroughly enjoyed the experiences on work sites around South Canterbury, with some looking at returning to continue their placements in Term 3.

The Gateway programme allows students to explore different career opportunities while still being at school. They learn practical skills and increase their knowledge in a chosen industry and also complete unit standards associated with that industry. Sometimes these unit standards count towards an apprenticeship if they choose to go down that pathway.

Employer feedback on the students has been positive and reaffirming to our Gateway programme. Comments have included; shows drive to learn, represents your school well, a huge help for us, is keen to get stuck in, listens and observes well, asks questions when unsure, is a real asset to the centre, has the perfect nature for this role, relates well with the children, works really well building relationships here with other staff.
