The House Update
'The House' has had an exciting start to Term Three.
We have welcomed in Luisa, a German student teacher who will stay in the hostel for the remainder of the year, competed in the school Lip Sync and celebrated being boarders alongside many other boarding schools during NZ Boarding Week!
NZ Boarding Week
Last week 'The House' celebrated NZ Boarding Week. Each year the NZ Boarding School Association picks a week for all boarding houses to celebrate being boarders and rallying the boarding community together. This year we replaced our homework time with activities in the evening and we had so much fun!
On Monday we invited recent Old Girl Phoebe Geary back to talk to us about her journey from TGHS to university and how she landed her teaching job at Waihi School. Phoebe had some great tips around job interviews and subject choices whilst in High School. Hostel mum Karly Geary also joined us and explained her journey from school to nursing. Karly reminded us that you do not always have to take the common path from school to university to be successful and explained how she is continuing to learn and upskill within her nursing career. To finish the night, the boarders all enjoyed a Mr Whippy Ice-cream. Thank you so much Phoebe and Karly for joining us.
Tuesday we headed over to the gym and had a very competitive Hostel Olympics programme set up. We started with an opening ceremony, followed by shot put, archery, Relay, and Multi-sport. At the medal ceremony Argentina (Year 11/13 combined team) came out on top. To finish the night, Sweden (Year 12) led the closing ceremony with a full house dance party!
Wednesday saw the juniors visit TBHS Hostel for a games night and seniors watching a movie with snacks. Thanks Thomas House for leading the games night!
Thursday was all go for our seniors preparing for the ball. A big thank you to hostel mum and owner of Beauty Worx, Eliza, who came in to do spray tanning, with all proceeds coming back into the hostel. Whilst the seniors were busy, Year 9 & 10 went for a swim at Cbay and Year 11 got baking for the hungry juniors who returned from the pool.
Friday we hosted our annual pre-ball. It was lovely to have our senior families join us for drinks and nibbles. Another big thank you to hostel dad Ian Gardiner for being our photographer for the night.
Lip Sync
Week Two saw The House compete in the school Lip Sync Competition and earn second place! Each year our hostel leaders put together a theme, and rally all 60 boarders on stage. This year our theme was 'Pitch Perfect' an acapella group who can be dysfunctional at times. Amber Wilson was our main character 'Amy' and each year group put together a dance routine. This year our performance was extra special as we were joined on stage by 'Old Girls' Janine Quigley and Ang Habraken and our very own hostel staff. Thanks to hostel mum Emmily Harmers filming, we now have put the footage of our performance on our Hostel FB page. Well done to Annie Shearer and Rebecca Kidd for leading the 2024 House Lip Sync.
Boarder of the Week
Congratulations to our most recent boarders of the week;
Rebecca Kidd: Selected by her peers for the hard work and countless hours she put into the hostel music. Thanks Rebecca!
Emma Gardiner: Chosen by staff and senior boarders for demonstrating the House values consistently.
