Nau mai, Haere Mai! Welcome back everyone to a new school year!
I am delighted at the way that all of our students have settled into a new school year.
Our Year 9 students have made a strong impression and many people in the school have been impressed by the respect that they are showing and the positive attitude towards their schooling that they are demonstrating. We also have a number of new students in the school in Year 10 and upwards. We welcome them warmly and wish them all the best as they embark on their TGHS journey. I extend a welcome to the parents of all of our new students. You too, are joining our TGHS community and I look forward to getting to know many of you over the upcoming weeks and months.
As we start our 2020 year we are saddened by the fact that we have lost one of our team members. Mr Matthew Chapman passed away on 9 th January this year after a short, but courageous, battle with cancer. Mr Chapman was a kind, caring and compassionate person and an outstanding teacher. He is missed by both his colleagues, and his students. His passing is a good reminder to us all to live with love, and appreciate every day that we get to make a positive difference. A memorial service is being held for Mr Chapman on Friday 21st February, 1.45pm in our school hall. We miss you Chappy, RIP. x
We have recently completed the process for the appointment of our senior student leaders and we are looking forward to working alongside them, and our wider Year 13 cohort, helping them all grow as leaders in our school.
As a school, we are on a journey of constant improvement. We are in the midst of re-setting our Strategic Plan for the next 3 years, which is exciting. This will be shared with our parent community very soon.
The start of the year is a good time to reflect on the year that has been, and to identify some areas that we want to improve upon in the new year. I encourage everyone, students and staff, at TGHS to aim to better themselves in some small way this term.
I finish by quoting our school whakatauki:Ko te manu e kai ana I te Miro, no na te ngahere, engari, ko te manu e kai ana I te Matauranga, nona te ao.To the student who has a narrow outlook, her opportunities are limited, but to the student who is open to learning and growing, her opportunities are unlimited.
May every TGHS student in 2020, be open to learning and growing so that she may experience success!
Thank you to our parents, for your continued support of our school.
