TGHS Careers Department May Update

TGHS Careers —

There are still a lot of things happening in the Careers space, despite the recent interruptions. I want to reassure you that we will be doing all we can to ensure students get the best career education possible, so they can make informed decisions about their future pathways.

Gateway - Three students were lucky enough to start their Gateway placements prior to lockdown - Abbey Barker at Showground Auto Services, Ash Lang at Craighead Kindergarten and Poppy Miles at Neal & Co Farms. I am hopeful that we will be able to get the remaining Gateway students out on placement towards the end of Term 2 or in Term 3. If you are keen to host a Gateway student, please contact me, I would love to hear from you!

Tertiary - Normally the liaison officers visit schools in Terms 1 & 2 to give introductory presentations. UC and Otago Polytech visited us before lockdown and the students have taken part in Zoom presentations with Auckland, Otago and Massey Universities. There are online information sessions happening next Tuesday 26th May with Victoria University, SIT and UC. Then Ara, Lincoln University and Queenstown Resort College will be visiting school in June.

I will send out a more detailed newsletter to Year 13 students and whanau next week outlining key dates for course, accommodation and scholarship applications. In the meantime please don’t panic as you still have lots of time and I will support you with your applications.

CVs, Cover Letters & Interviews - Career Central https://careercentral.school.nz/ has a CV Builder tool which students can use to create their own CV. Otherwise you can also find CV templates on Google Docs or other websites. I am happy to assist students with their CV’s, Cover letters and interview techniques.

My Next Move - Aoraki Development are still looking for Year 12-13 students to take part in their Mentoring Programme. Interested students will be matched with a business mentor who will work alongside them to explore potential pathways and introduce them to industry contacts.

Likewise they are also looking for volunteers within the community to act as mentors for our local secondary school students. Please contact Courtney at Aoraki Development if you are interested: courtney@aorakidevelopment.co.nz
