Aoraki Secondary School Junior Sports Week

TGHS —

In Term 4 each year Aoraki Secondary School Sport runs a Junior Sports Week.

Unfortunately this year the Year 10 students were away on camp but on the flipside this was a great chance for our Year 9 students to have the opportunity to compete and take part in a range of activities and sports.

With schools competing from throughout the Aoraki Secondary School district the week was packed with plenty of activity.

The Amazing Race and the Top Teams were two events that we entered our form classes in. Both these events are based on communication and working as a team. We took the opportunity to mix the girls up in groups and work with other students that may not necessarily be in their friend groups etc. To watch the girls work on tasks throughout the day in their groups was awesome to see and how they quickly learnt that communication and working as a team were crucial for their success. A great couple of days were had at both these events.

Our two Year 9 volleyball teams competed at the Aoraki Secondary School Tournament with both teams showing huge improvement throughout the day. With both of these teams new to volleyball and the first tournament for many they also had the added challenge of playing against predominately Year 10 teams.

A group of Year 9 students who have been learning Ki O Rahi in their Physical Education classes headed to Marchwiel Park for the Ki O Rahi festival and also showed huge improvement throughout the day. These girls have also been upskilled in Ki O Rahi with a mentor coming down from Christchurch to work with the group of students who attended the festival and they can now go on to helping others in their classes.

A massive thanks must go to Aoraki Secondary School Sport who put on all of the events over the week and also to Malfy, Mrs Harrison and Miss Kerridge who supported the girls at the events during the week.
