TGHS —

On Friday the 23 October we held our Distinction Assembly.

Congratulations to all the award winners.

Distinction Awards

Distinction – Bella Thin. Bella has been awarded a distinction in Athletics. At the Timaru Girls’ High School Athletics Bella broke the Under 15 Girls 100m record that has stood since 1994.

Distinction – Holly Thin. Holly has been awarded a distinction in Athletics. At the Timaru Girls’ High School Athletics Holly broke the original record in the heats that has stood since 1994 only to be bettered by her sister Bella in the 100m Finals. Holly continued her form later in the day breaking records in the Under 15 200m (a record that has also stood since 1994) and went on to break our Black Fern Jorja Millers 400m record from 2016.

Distinction – Heidi Uys. Heidi has been awarded a distinction in Swimming. Heidi represented Timaru Girls’ High School at the NZ Secondary School Swimming Championships finishing with two top 10 finishes with her best a 8th place finish in the 200m Breaststroke. An amazing result!

Distinction – Maggie Macdonald. Maggie has been awarded a distinction in Basketball. Maggie has had a stellar basketball season earning most valuable junior player in the South Canterbury Secondary School Basketball Competition and being selected for the NZ Under 14 NZ Basketball Camp.

Distinction – Frayah Macdonald – Frayah has had an amazing season on the Basketball court. Frayah was named most valuable senior player in the South Canterbury Secondary School Basketball Competition, was the leading points scorer in the Senior Women’s South Canterbury Competition and was invited to attend the NZ Basketball National age group selection camp for talented players.

Distinction – Ivy Mcleod-FrewenIvy has been awarded a distinction in Softball. In March this year Ivy was selected for the NZ Under 15 Development Softball squad.

Distinction – Lily Weir – Lily has been awarded a distinction in Power Boat racing. Lily has been turning heads in the power boat racing circles since she began her career in racing. Lily recently took out the 2022 South Island Junior Powerboat Racing Championships – Amazing effort considering Lily is still 15 years old!


Distinction – Chloe KerslakeChloe has been awarded a distinction in Football. Chloe has had a great year on the football field. She has represented South Canterbury and was recently named in the Southern United Under 19 Football team that will play in the National League.  


High Achievement Awards

Hanan Shield U18 Rugby 2022 Bailee Ellery and Tara Bensted — Image by: TGHS

Rugby

High Achievement – Tara Bensted. Tara was recently named in the Hanan Shield Secondary School Girls Rugby Team. The Hanan Shield is made up of the best secondary school girls’ players from Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury, and North Otago.

High Achievement – Bailee Ellery. Bailee was recently named in the Hanan Shield Secondary School Girls Rugby Team. The Hanan Shield is made up of the best secondary school girls’ players from Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury, and North Otago.


Football

High Achievement – TGHS 1st XI Football. For going through unbeaten in the Aoraki Secondary Schools Football League that was played mid-week throughout the season. The 1st XI Football team also won their match v Waitaki Girls’ High School at the Waitaki Winter Exchange.

Basketball

High Achievement – Senior Basketball Team for winning the Senior Girls Grade in the South Canterbury Secondary School Basketball Competition

Gymnastics

Casey-May Watt – Casey-May recently competed at the NZ Gymnastics Championships finishing in 5th place in the in the individual open and won gold medals in the Aerobics Aero dance Group and won a gold medal in the Open 4 trio.


Swimming


Emma Campbell – Emma recently competed at both the South Island and NZ Secondary Schools swimming championships. At the South Island Secondary School Swimming Championships Emma earned a silver medal in the 100m backstroke, bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke and a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke and at the NZ Secondary School Swimming Championships Emma had 4 top 20 finishes and recorded personal bests in those races.


Service Awards

Hockey 

Service to Hockey – Kate Poulter, Gemma Davidson, Libby O’Connor and Charlotte Watson Kate, Gemma, Libby, and Charlotte have all played hockey at Timaru Girls’ High School for 5 years and in that time have contributed greatly both on and off the field. All four students have coached junior hockey teams every year and helped at Hockey South Canterbury Holiday Programmes. All girls are great role models for younger players and are well respected in the Hockey community.

Netball 

Service to Netball – Ruby Hull. Ruby umpires on a Saturday and Wednesdays in the Premier Plate grade. In August Ruby attended the SISS Netball Tournament for Timaru Girls’ High School and volunteers to umpire all school fixtures and exchanges.

Pasifika Group

Service to Pasifika Group - Caroline Kaulave and Faith Sefo-Leger- Caroline and Faith have been awarded service awards to the Pasifika Group. Caroline and Faith have been involved in the Pasifika Group during their time at Timaru Girls’ High School and have both made a tremendous contribution to the group. Both students have given back a huge amount of their own time leading the group at school events and in the community. Both fantastic role models.

Music

Service to Music – Sophie Watt – Sophie receives a service award for her contribution to Music at Timaru Girls’ High School. Sophie has played for the South Canterbury Youth Orchestra (piano) and preformed a solo at their major concert at St Marys last Saturday. Sophie has accompanied her house, learns singing and attends Rock Band practices at Timaru Girls’ High School

Service to Sound and Lighting – Jamie George and Koseni Moimoi. Jamie and Koseni work in the engine room of the sound and lighting at Timaru Girls’ High School. Both give a huge amount of their own time to ensure the sound and lighting is in top notch order at all events that are held in the Nora Dickie Hall. Both girls are passionate and enthusiastic, and nothing is ever a problem to them.
