Update from the Principal

Ms Hales —

I hope everyone is managing to keep warm as we all feel the pinch of these wintry morning frosts!

Last week our seniors sat their internal exams which will give the girls a good indication of how they are progressing in their respective subjects.

Round 2 of Academic Conferencing is coming up on Monday 11th September. This is a good opportunity to review goals for the girls as they come into the last third of their school year. Thank you in advance to those of you who take time off work and / or travel a distance, to attend these meetings and be a part of these important conversations.

Our senior A Basketball, Football, Netball and Hockey teams are gearing up for their finale of the year – Tournament Week. 3 out of 4 of our teams are playing in Timaru, so be sure to get along and support them, if you can (Hockey and Basketball up at the stadium, and Football at Sir Basil Arthur Park). Good luck also to our Senior A Netball team, who are travelling to Invercargill for their competition.

The second half of Term 3 sees us starting to think about what subjects the girls will want to take in 2024. Our course selection evening, scheduled for Wednesday 6th September, is a valuable opportunity for you as a family to enquire about subjects, and get expert advice about what course of learning would be best for your daughter(s), based on her interests, strengths and aspirations for the future.

The next few weeks is also a busy time for the Arts in our school. The “House Choirs” competition is looming, and is always an enjoyable, a fiercely contested event. Our House Leaders do a fantastic job leading their troops through the lunchtime practises getting ready for competition day. As well as this, our annual Lip Sync is set to take place on the 25th of August. This is always a lot of fun and provides a platform to generate some positive school spirit.

Most students have adapted well to the new regulations around phone use in class. We will review this before the end of the year as we look towards 2024.

We are looking forward to meeting our new incoming Year 8 families over the next few weeks as we complete enrolment interviews; Nau mai, haere mai! Welcome to the TGHS community!

I hope you enjoy reading through this edition of our newsletter.

Ngā mihi nui,

Deb Hales
