Timaru Girls' High School Athletics Day - 2025.

Janelle Amalfitano —

A record was broken, and history was made at the 2025 Timaru Girls' High School Athletics Day!

The 2025 Timaru Girls' High School Athletics Day has continued on from every other year where our students have turned up with great attitudes, plenty of enthusiasm and house spirit leading to some impressive participation across all house groups.

This year we were treated to some exceptional results in the track and field events with blistering times on the track and big distances achieved in the field and jumping events.

We had a record broken in the Under 16 Shotput with Holeva Fukofuka recording a throw of 10.82 metres breaking Zion Reihana's 2020 record and a special piece of history was made with Bella Thin taking out the Chrissie Chastle Cup. This cup is run annually and is contested by the 8 fastest girls across all age groups on the day. Bella has won this prestigious trophy in Year 9, Year 10, Year 11, Year 12 and in her final year this year as a Year 13 student. With this piece of history on the line the archives were opened to see if anyone had ever achieved this feat before and we were excited when we knew history could be made in 2025. As the starting gun fired in the 2025 Chrissie Chastle Cup, we all held our breath to see if Bella could complete the clean sweep and she powered away in the last 50m to take out the race and own a piece of history that may not be repeated for a very longtime! The Chrissie Chastle Cup was first presented in 1946. Chrissie Chastle (nee Gardiner) was a student at Timaru Girls' High School from 1941 - 1945 and only recently passed away at the grand age of 92.

The Interhouse Tug of War is the highlight of the day where the junior and senior houses go head-to-head in a battle of the strongest house. Rata won the chocolates this year in both the Senior and Junior Tug of War ending Koninis rein of Tug of War champions the last few years!

Our 8 house leaders battled 8 staff in a tug of war with very pleasing results that went in favour of the staff!

Congratulations to our 2025 Athletics Champions:

Under 14 - Hayley Tairua (Champion), Chloe McKenzie (Runner-Up)

Under 15 - Addison Campbell (Champion), Rinah Bird (Runner-Up)

Under 16 - Amya Bird (Champion), Akacia Moss (Runner-Up)

Under 19 - Tessa Macdonald & Holly Thin (Champions), Helena Shelton (Runner-Up)

House Results

2nd Place - Kowhai

Days like this don't run themselves and a massive thanks must go to my fellow staff members who do a fantastic job across the day running their events. Our house leaders are exceptional young ladies who this year rallied their troops with enthusiasm, passion and pride and this showed across the day.

Next up - is swimming sports and we can't wait!
