TGHS Sport 2023
Winter Sport is well underway with plenty happening on the courts and fields around the South Canterbury and Aoraki Region where our girl’s have been competing.
Winter Sport is a massive undertaking in our school, and we simply could not do it without the wonderful volunteers and staff who give up so much of their own time to help the girl’s each week. Thank you to each and every one of you who help with sport at Timaru Girls’ High School.
To give an insight to Winter Sport at Timaru Girls’ High School we have the following team numbers competing over the winter season along with teams competing at Aoraki Secondary School events during the term.
Football – 1 team
Hockey – 2 teams
Netball – 9 Teams
Rugby – 2 teams
Basketball – 5 teams
Badminton – 8 teams
This term Netball, Basketball, Squash, Cycling, Cross Country, and Swimming teams will represent Timaru Girls’ High School competing against other secondary schools from throughout the Aoraki Region.
We are only halfway through term two and plenty of events have happened already with some fantastic team and individual results. Below is a snippet of what we have been up to so far this term. Congratulations to our students who have represented our school in these events. I am always proud to take our girls to events outside of school as they always represent our school to the highest standard showing great sportsmanship.
Aoraki Swimming
Aoraki Secondary School Swimming was held in Ashburton on Friday 26th May. The girls recorded some fantastic individual results and as a team won the 15 and over Freestyle Relay and were placed second in the 15 and over Individual Medley Relay.

Under 15 - Emma Campbell - 3rd 100m IM, 3rd 200m Freestyle, 2nd 200m IM, 2nd 50m Breaststroke.
15 & Over - Hannah Boorer-Lilley - 10th 100m IM, 7th 50m Backstroke, 3rd 100m Breaststroke, 5th 50m Fly.
15 & Over - Hannah Heffernan - 2nd 50m Freestyle, 3rd 50m Backstroke, 5th 100m Backstroke, 5th 100m Freestyle.
Under 15 - Charli McKenzie - 3rd 50m Backstroke, 4th 100m Backstroke, 4th 100m Breaststroke, 3rd 100m Fly.
15 & Over - Heidi Uys - 4th 50m Backstroke, 3rd 50m Breaststroke, 3rd 100m Freestyle, 2nd 100m Fly.
Waitaki Exchange
On Wednesday 24th May we hosted Waitaki Girls’ High School for our annual Winter Sports Exchange.
Timaru Girls’ High School ended up taking the win overall.
Congratulations to all the players from both schools who gave it everything on the court and field throughout the day, all while showing great sportsmanship.
Thank you to all the staff, coaches, managers, umpires, and officials who gave up their time to help and make it all happen!

Timaru Girls’ High School Cross Country
The Timaru Girls’ High School Cross Country was well received this year with great participation and enthusiasm by all our students. The sun came out and we enjoyed a very warm autumn day with the temperature ticking over to 25 degrees in the middle of the racing.

Aoraki Cross Country
On Tuesday 16th May, our Year 9 and Junior runners competed at the Aoraki Secondary School Cross Country Champs held at Ashbury Park.
It was a fantastic day, with runners from all over the Aoraki region competing.
Congratulations to the Year 9 and Junior Girls who both finished in 3rd place in the team’s events.
Reon Hatata
Congratulations to Reon Hatata who was a finalist for the Volunteer of the Year category at the recent Aoraki Sports Awards. Reon has been the coach of our First X1 Football team for the past several years, and thanks to his commitment, support, and passion (along with some other wonderful supporters), our team has experienced consistent success over the past few years and is currently the top team in the league. It is volunteers like Reon who help to keep school sport alive and thriving. Thank you for all that you do for our Football girls. Congratulations!
Casey Gubb
Following a very successful show jumping season winning the NZ national title 1.10-1.20 pony championship in the Canterbury Cup and Hussy paint and panel pony mini prix series over the South Island, Casey has been selected to represent NZ and will travel to Brazil for the South American leg of 2023 Global Amateur tour.
Casey will take part in a 12-day tour riding in one national competition and one international competition, 4 days training to 1.15 plus and 4 days competing and representing NZ.

Tara Bensted
Year 12 student Tara Bensted has had a successful season competing in Rodeo events (barrel racing) throughout New Zealand.
Tara placed:
2nd in Te Anau, 1st in Gisborne, 3rd in Wairoa, 1st at Southland, 1st in Waimate, 1st at Maniototo ending her rookie year top 6 in the national standings and top four in the South Island.
Tara has now been announced by NZRCA (New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys Association) as 1 of the 4 who have been selected to barrel race to represent NZ for the Trans Taman youth challenge in September.
