Timetable Changes for 2025
Next year our timetable will change to 5 periods per day.
An email was sent to parents on the 13 December advising the following:
We are writing to inform you of an important change to the structure of the school day at Timaru Girls’ High School. Beginning in 2025, we will move from a six-period schedule to a five-period schedule. This decision was made after careful consideration of how we can best meet the educational and well-being needs of our students, and in consultation with our brother school, Timaru Boys’ High School.
Why the Change?
1. Enhancing Learning Opportunities:
By extending the duration of each period, students will have more time to engage deeply with the material being taught.
2. Reducing Daily Transitions:
Fewer periods mean fewer transitions between classes, which can help minimise disruptions and maximise teaching and learning time.
3. Supporting Student Well-being:
Longer periods allow for a more relaxed pace, helping to reduce the pressure students feel to "rush" through lessons and homework. It also reduces the cognitive load on students as they manage multiple subjects and activities throughout the day.
4. Equity across all subjects:
All subjects (both core and option) will have the same amount of time across the week.
What Will Change?
Daily Timetable: Five periods instead of six. Each of the five periods will be longer, allowing for more in-depth exploration of subjects. The exact timetable will be shared with students and parents ahead of the change.
Breaks: Break times have been adjusted slightly to ensure students still have adequate opportunities to rest and recharge during the day.
Introduction of Ako time: Each year level will have one hour a week of Ako time which will provide students the opportunity to focus on personal growth, set meaningful goals, and engage in activities that support their holistic development and well-rounded education.
We understand that changes to the school day can feel significant, but we are confident that this adjustment will have a positive impact on your child’s learning experience and overall well-being.
