Ara On Air Workshop
During the holidays, Year 12 student Tiah Moore, attended the Ara On-Air Workshop in Christchurch.
"On the first day, we looked at the radio aspect of broadcasting. We mainly learned about advertisements and what goes into them. Target audiences, depth behind them, etc. We then had a go at creating our own ad and recording it in the sound booth. We also each had a few sentences to read on-air on the NZBS radio channel called "Bassline".
The next two days were probably my favourite, and I enjoyed them the most. We looked at the Screen Production stream in the film studio. We learned how to operate basic cameras, and learned other skills such as floor managing, directing, sound control and others. We put these skills to use by filming fake interviews. In pairs, we each took turns being the talent that would be filmed. We improved pretend interviews which led to many laughs and great fun.
On the final day we were introduced to Journalism. We learned about News Headlines and what makes them important. There was a fake police case, where we had to ask questions to find out more information to be able to write a news headline and radio broadcast about it. Finally, we focused on the speaking aspect of Journalism. We had a go at reading tongue twisters, as well as reading a News Bulletin into microphones on a recording device.
I had lots of fun and it has opened my eyes to career pathways. Thank you again for the awesome opportunity! "
