Celebrating Samoan Language Week at Titirangi School

Andrea Thomas —

Manuia le Taeao, this week was Samoan Language Week - Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa.

Classrooms came alive with the vibrant sounds and rich traditions of Samoa as we celebrated Samoan Language Week. This annual event is dedicated to promoting the Samoan language and culture, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation among our students.

Students participated in a variety of engaging activities. Teachers and classrooms incorporated the language week in different ways - some completed traditional Samoan artwork while other learned some key vocabulary.

Classrooms were decorated with beautiful Samoan artwork, including siapo (tapa cloth) designs and colorful lavalava (wrap-around skirts). Students enjoyed crafting their own siapo patterns and learning about the significance of these traditional art forms.

Samoan Language Week highlights the importance of cultural diversity and inclusion. It is a joyful reminder of the richness of Samoan culture and the value of learning about and celebrating different heritages.

Talofa tagata uma,

To celebrate Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa, Room 13 created a collaborative artwork together. All the pieces joined together to make a tapa cloth, and the old proverb from Samoa says "O lupe sa vao ese'ese, ae ua fuifui faatasi," which translates as "We are from different parts of the forest, but connected in one cause."Manuia le vaiaso!
