Science at school
You may remember last year we told you about the Science Teaching Leadership Programme that our fabulous Mrs Vicki Moffat had been on for the first 6 months of 2024.
Mrs Moffat is now back at TPS Full time and sharing her learning and her passion for science with the tamariki of TPS.
Each Wednesday classes have a half day of learning about being a scientist exploring many different domains of science.
The Year 5 and 6’s are exploring the engineering feats of our navy and got to construct a hydraulic crane to lift a nominated cargo weight, with the process being more important than the final product. They also have to learn how to work with a variety of people to complete the task.
The Year 3’s and 4’s will be exploring minibeasts and comparing them to the human body systems that they have been learning about.
The Year 2s have been extending their learning from last year about the moon by investigating the patterns of the moon and comparing it with Te Ao Māori way of measuring time with the maramataka (lunar calendar).
The Year 1 students will be using their senses to understand how they are like a scientist. It is important that the students see themselves as scientists and recognise the skills they use when being a scientist.
Mrs Moffat has also arranged for some visits during the term from some "real-life" scientists. They will talk to students who are interested in science about what they do and why they do it. We are so excited for this journey. TPS students will be the future problem-solvers, innovators and inventors of this world.
