Student Spotlight: Navigating to Success!

Andrea Thomas —

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the recent sporting achievements of two of our students, Emily and Mona, who have taken the orienteering world by storm over the past year!

From Sidelines to Starting Lines

The girls first got a taste for orienteering last year while watching their older siblings (both Titirangi alumni) competing for their respective Intermediate schools. Inspired by the challenge, Emily and Mona decided to stop watching from the sidelines and start competing themselves.

They set their sights on the Forest Cup, one of the premier orienteering competitions in Auckland. The Forest Cup is a rigorous five-race series held on Sundays, hosted by clubs across the Auckland and Waikato regions.

Racing Across the Region

This wasn’t your average run through the local park! The competition took the girls to diverse and challenging landscapes, including:

  • Killarney Lakes in Te Aroha

  • Woodhill and Waiuku Forests

  • Waipipi on the rugged Awhitu Coast

Armed with only a map and a compass, Emily and Mona had to navigate their way through farmland, dense forests, and shifting sand dunes to find "controls" and rack up as many points as possible. It requires a mix of physical fitness, quick thinking, and serious map-reading skills.

A Champion in Our Midst

A massive congratulations to Emily, who placed 1st overall and received an engraved Forest Cup mug in the Women’s 10 Years & Under category! This is an Auckland-wide competition, making her victory a truly impressive feat.

Give it a Go!

Both Emily and Mona have joined the North West Orienteering Club. Orienteering is a fantastic "adventure sport" for the whole family. If your child loves the outdoors and a good challenge, North West Orienteering regularly hosts family events perfect for beginners.

Well done, Emily and Mona—you’ve shown us that with a bit of direction and a lot of determination, you can go anywhere!
