Tumuaki / Principal Korero - Attendance and Our School Whānau: Why Every Day Matters

Andrea Thomas —

At Titirangi School, we know that our students thrive when they feel a strong sense of belonging. Regular attendance helps to create that sense of belonging and connection.

Our classrooms aren’t just places for desks and books; they are little communities where your child’s unique voice, humour, and ideas make a difference every single day.

Planning Overseas Travel? Let’s Chat! We live in a beautiful, diverse community, and we understand the importance of travelling to visit whānau and connecting with your family overseas. These experiences are incredibly valuable.

If you are planning a trip, we’d love to work with you proactively:

  • School Holidays: Please try to use school holidays for overseas travel - especially when travelling to nearby countries.

  • Touch Base Early: Let your child’s teacher know your plans. We’d love to hear about where they are going! For any trips 5 days or longer, we ask that you email andreat@titirangi.school.nz to advise travel dates and reasons for the absence.

  • The "Travel Log": Prepare some way your whānau can include some reading and writing activities that can be shared with the class when you get back. We don't expect teachers to provide work for students taking holidays in term time.

The Big Picture Did you know that missing just two days a month adds up to nearly a year of missed learning by the time a student reaches High School? Our goal isn’t "perfect" attendance—it’s consistent attendance, because your child is an essential part of our school puzzle.

Lateness in the morning is another area we would like to make improvements on this year - the large majority - 90% of students in Term 4 2025 - got to school on time. However, the small number of students arriving late are often familiar to us, they are sometimes late multiple times a week. This adds up to a lot of lost learning time but also results in an unsettled start to the day. That feeling of being late and being the last to arrive frequently is pretty uncomfortable, even for an adult, imagine what that can be like when you are just 5 or 6 years old.

The Magic of Consistency In term 4 last year, we had 76% of our students attend school regularly. This is definitely an improvement from 2024 but we are still aiming for that magic 90% of students attending regularly. Regular attendance is being at school 90% of the term.

Fridays are the days that have the worst attendance by students.

"Odd days" or extended trips away can make it harder for students to jump back into their learning and friendships. When a student is away, we truly miss them! Let's commit to being at school more than we ever have.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep our learning community strong!
