CHOOSING SUBJECTS FOR 2019

Kavanagh College Course booklet. The booklet for courses offered in 2019 is now available in both hard copy and online. Students have been issued with a copy and will enter options online.

Please go to the school website click on Menu and go to Year 11 – 13 Overview under the curriculum tab. Click on “Choosing a Subject”. Here you will find general information on what should be taken into consideration when making course choices, where to get informed help when making subject and career decisions, NCEA certificate criteria, University Entrance requirements, fees and information on all the courses to be offered in 2019. A Career and Course Planning sheet can also be found here.

There are a limited number of printed booklets available from the school office and the Library.

Students will be guided through the booklet by tutor teachers and Head of Departments have run seminars where students could seek further information on specific courses. The Careers Department is also available for students to make appointments where career advice is needed. Please contact the school if you require any assistance.

Use careers website to help select potential careers and explore entry requirements for specific training courses.
Take a 3-year approach to subject selection
Be mindful of the specific requirements for U. E. (University Entrance) including Literacy and Numeracy.

Reminder: your choices are your future. Keep in mind the formula:

INTEREST + ABILITY + OCCUPATION = SUBJECT CHOICE

Do not take a subject just because your friends are taking it

Completed Option choices are due into the School by Thursday13th September. This year the students will make their choices online.

If you are needing further guidance on which career paths might best suit you then visit www.careers.govt.nz and have a look at some of the Tools. (Top right of the screen).

Scroll down and use these tools, “Subject matcher”, “Jobs by Interest” or “Skill matcher” to find possible careers. Click on the suggested careers and view the How to enter the job to find out about the entry criteria and subjects that you should be taking at school.

More material and pamphlets about various careers are available from our Career Advice office staff – Ms Amelia Bresanello (extension 237) or Mrs Paula Dodds (extension 236) .

The internet has become a valuable tool for accessing information on universities and training institutions. Students have access to the computer suites at lunchtime and after school.
