On Thursday, 13th March, students had the incredible opportunity to take part in a Te Rākau Theatre Workshop, led by renowned actor and director Jim Moriarty, alongside his children Hariata and Tamati.
Te Rākau Theatre is known for its kaupapa-driven approach, fusing drama devising with Māori tikanga to create powerful and thought-provoking performances. This workshop allowed students to explore storytelling through a cultural lens, developing their creative skills while deepening their understanding of identity, history, and the role of theatre as a tool for social change.
In preparation for the workshop, students were asked to research the origins of their names—whether through conversations with their whānau or by exploring different cultures. This exercise encouraged meaningful reflection, helping students connect with their personal and cultural identities before bringing these stories to life through performance.
Throughout the morning, students engaged in a series of activities designed to build confidence, creativity, and collaboration. Under Jim’s expert guidance, and with the support of Hariata and Tamati, they explored movement, voice, and improvisation, culminating in a devised performance that showcased their newfound skills.
The workshop was a fantastic experience, leaving students inspired and excited about the possibilities of theatre. A huge thank you to Jim, Hariata, and Tamati for sharing their knowledge and passion, and to all the students who participated with enthusiasm and openness.
