The Year 12 Duke of Edinburgh students completed the Copeland Valley track last week.
On Sunday 9th February, 12 Year 12 students embarked on their Duke of Edinburgh adventurous journey.
On the first night, we travelled to Cameron Flat where students pitched their tents and made it through a night of rain! We were up early on Monday, packing away the tents and continuing our journey across to the West Coast.
At 10am, we arrived at the Copeland Valley car park and commenced our trek to Welcome Flat Hut. The walk meanders alongside the Copeland River. The start of the trail was relatively flat; however, there were lots of rocks and heavy packs to keep things challenging.
We had lunch at Architect Hut just over halfway along the trail before climbing up for a few more hours on the more challenging part of the trail to Welcome Flat Hut. Students were amazing on this first day and were treated to some time in the natural hot pools at Welcome Flat.
Students had to carry and cook their own food. They loved testing out the different dehydrated meals, with some meals much tastier than others!
On Tuesday, we were up early again and this time made our way along the route between Welcome Flat Hut and Douglas Rock Hut. This began as a flat walk, but we gained some elevation in the later part of the day. Students enjoyed their time at Douglas Rock Hut with a few card games, laughs, and some lunch before returning to Welcome Flat Hut for the final night.
On Wednesday, we set out early and walked the 7 hours back to the car park, stopping for our final dehydrated meal beside the river. Students were so resilient and positive throughout the trip, despite the blisters, wet clothes, and heavy packs!
We then returned to Dunedin with a little detour via Omarama, as the road was closed between Cromwell and Clyde. Fortunately, a 'rescue team' of Mr Harris and Mr and Mrs Waterworth met us in Weston to relieve the drivers! We made it home safely with memories that will last forever.
