Driving

There are extremely strict rules around driving in New Zealand for international students in secondary schools - these rules are made for student safety.
  • International students of Trinity Catholic College MUST NOT drive a motor vehicle, except for the purposes of gaining a valid New Zealand drivers’ licence, in formal lessons under the guidance of a licensed driving instructor.
  • Permission for professional lessons is granted in advance by the Principal and requires excellent attendance, behavior, and academic progress to even be considered.
  • You can not ask your host family to teach you to drive or use their vehicle/s either.
  • Overseas licenses CANNOT be used by students in NZ high schools.
  • Students CANNOT own a vehicle while studying at Trinity Catholic College.
  • You, and your parents, have signed a code of conduct that says you will follow the rules above - these rules are strict, but most schools in Dunedin don't allow international students to drive at all.

Working Part Time

It is possible to work part time while studying, but this requires a change in your visa and excellent time management skills.

A standard student visa does NOT give you the right to work in New Zealand and states very clearly "The holder shall not undertake work in NZ".

If a student wishes to work part time, they must apply to Immigration New Zealand for a Variation of Conditions. This change of conditions will also come with extra costs as part of the application.

You must also gain the permission of the Principal to work. This will only be granted to students aged over 17 years old, who have made strong academic progress and have a good behavior record. The International Department can help you with this process, so talk to us first.
