KORU BEACH TRIP
Over the course of term two, Koru have been learning about living things and their habitats. Yesterday we zoomed in on our own rocky shore habitat in Titahi Bay. All of Koru walked down to the beach and spent time investigating the rock pools, looking for and identifying the plants and animals that they could find. We saw crabs, anemones, starfish, periwinkles, sea snails, small fish, barnacles and more. We counted and observed them. We also learned about keeping ourselves safe when exploring the rock pools, as well as how to care for the creatures that live in them. While we explored, we noticed a lot of litter and we collected it. One of the reasons for learning about our local environments is so that we can become better kaitiaki - people who take care or protect - for the treasures that surround us. When we got back to school, we looked at the litter we collected, counting and classifying it. There was a lot of glass, as well as hard and soft plastics. We wondered how much of the rubbish we found could easily be blown out to sea and the impact of this.
