YEAR 6 NOHO

Jamie Merrick —

Last week our Year 6 students got to experience a Noho Marae. The experience began with a pōwhiri where we were formally welcomed onto Horouta Marae. Following this we had hākari (dinner). We then set up our beds in the Wharenui. Children then shared their pepeha. It was great to see so many children making connections with one another. The next day we had parakuihi/breakfast and then got into our activities. All children got to do 4 activities - Raranga/Weaving, Taonga Puoro (learning about and making musical instruments), Poi, and Dramatisation of Māori myths/legends. We all had a great time and really met our goal that all students get to experience Māori culture. We want each Māori child to know who they are where they come from so that they can always make a connection to where they belong no matter where they go in the future.
