Launching into the Deep traces the vision, formation and implementation of lay ministry in the Archdiocese of Wellington. This slim book covers the period of more than 50 years from just before Vatican Council II (1962-1965) to the current Implementation Phase of the Synod on Synodality.

It describes key documents of Vatican II and Christifideles Laici (1987) by Pope John Paul II that are aspirational in bringing about change in the Catholic Church. The 1988 Archdiocesan Synod, initiated by Cardinal Thomas Willliams, and subsequent synods, led to the development of the “Launch Out Programme/Te Hao Nui” led first by Joan McFetridge then by Maya Bernardo. Thirty-two lay women and men have completed the programme of study, spirituality and practical pastoral works. Lay formation for ministry was a clear priority for Cardinal Williams and his successor Cardinal John Dew.

Launching into the Deep acknowledges the reality that launching out takes vision, time and commitment. I recommend the book for those in leadership roles in the church and for men and women seeking to use their gifts within the ministries of the church. The facilitation of the ministry of the laity is imperative in this implementation phase of the Synod on Synodality — the legacy of Pope Francis.
