Abolishing the Military: Arguments and Alternatives

Tracy Robinson —

By Griffin Leonard, Joseph Llewellyn and Richard Jackson. Published by Bridget Williams Books, 2023. (NZD 18). Reviewed by Tracy Robinson

This short book is written primarily to invite discussions about the myths surrounding the benefits to having a defence force; the need for it, the justification of its costs, along with the security it provides and benefits to our society.

When presented with Abolishing the Military to review, I did not expect to enjoy it, let alone relate to it. It is easy to assume we need a defence force and the government knows best. This book changed my thinking on all of that.

I was astounded to learn the history of the New Zealand Defence Force was still largely modelled in its origins from the white settler colonisation period and that it is better funded than in countries such as Germany, Canada and Japan.

The book became remarkably relevant in light of our newly elected government and what appears to be inevitable return to power of Trump which will accelerate the rise of the global right-wing movement.

I would recommend this book to those interested in the current political scene, anyone looking for alternatives to war and ways to engender peace in our world – surely that is everyone!
