It is with sadness that we heard of the death of Daniel in England in the early hours of Monday 21 January.

Daniel O'Leary has delighted and nourished us with his writing over the years in Tui Motu magazine and in his books. Most of his articles we printed were published first in The Tablet but in May 2017 he sent us our own article, "The Invisible Twin or Paradox of Life and Death". Many of our readers have written over the years saying how much they appreciated Daniel's contributions.

Last June Daniel told us that he had been diagnosed with cancer and over the following months we kept in contact with him. On 9 November Ann Hassan and I received the message: 

"This morning I begin a day of communicating the attached to friends. My love to you both goes with it. 

"Yesterday we decided to stop all chemotherapy and to let nature take her course. There is no need to reply to this until things settle down, including the side-effects of previous treatment, and until the intensity of the spreading tumour and the expected time limitations are clearer. The next few days will be devoted to reflection on my decision, and to sending this message to many friends. In the meantime, the world keeps turning! Much love and deepest thanks for your amazing support and prayers. Daniel"

Since then Daniel's messages have been brief. His death came quickly. 

We remember Daniel with love and gratitude and send our sympathy and prayer to his family and many friends.
