Tui Motu Celebrates 20 Years of Publishing

Ann Gilroy —

A great group of subscribers and friends gathered to celebrate Tui Motu magazine's publishing milestone and to honour Dunedin-based volunteers, artists and writers on Friday 10 November at St Patrick's basilica in South Dunedin.

The Tui Motu Board bookended the evening with food, wine, conversation and laughter. The more formal proceedings included a digital presentation of highlights of the 20 years and an opportunity for those gathered to hear from the former editorial teams and affirm their commitment to and development of the magazine. (Watch the presentation below.)

The present editorial team, Ann Gilroy and Ann Hassan, outlined their plans to use the United Nations sustainable development goals as themes for the 2018 issues, along with a thread on prayer and meditation and another on young writers.

Then the giving of honours became a procession as volunteers, promoters and writers stepped up to receive certificates. Volunteers like Jim Neilan have been with the magazine for almost 20 years and Shirley Curran and Brian Rae have fundraised and assisted in the distribution of the magazine for many years. Elizabeth Mackie OP, Rita Cahill RSJ, Jan Ogilvie OP and Sean Brosnahan were thanked for promoting the magazine in parishes over the 20 years. And Paul Sorrell and Kathleen Rushton were commended for their commitment to regular writing for Tui Motu

Malcolm Farry explained the work of the Tui Motu Foundation which is investing funds in order to maintain the magazine staffing into the future.

The spirit of joyous gratitude for the past and hope for the future is expressed in our prayer:

We thank God, Communion of Love
for all who support Tui Motu
through subscribing, reading, contributing and promoting.
May our magazine continue to inform, nourish
and stitch us together.
