Term 2 Topics

For Term 2 the Māhuri team has an overall theme/ topic called ‘Forces and Motion’. The big understanding for the unit is that - ‘People, places and things change over time’.

To start the term we are learning about the ANZACs and how their experiences during World War 1 influenced those men and women who served, and also how it influenced the rest of our society in New Zealand. We will then be moving onto a science based unit, learning about naturally occurring forces (such as gravity, friction, magnetism, etc) and how they influence us and our world. We are hoping it’s going to be interesting and a lot of fun as well!

Swimming Lessons

For the first two weeks of this term the Māhuri team are taking part in daily swimming lessons. The lessons cover a range of activities from general water safety through to improving swimming skills and ability.

Each day the classes will travel by bus to Dudley Pool for a 25 minute (approx.) swimming lesson. Please refer to previous notices about the exact times each class will be attending their lessons.

Children are expected to take part in this curriculum activity, so please ensure they bring togs, a towel and goggles on the days we go swimming. Also having a clearly named and suitable swimming bag is a good idea.

Friday Winter Sports

Most Fridays in Term 2 all of our Year 5-8 students participate in a weekly sports competition. The children have already chosen their sports and should by now have a winter sports uniform. The children will come to school on Fridays in the normal school uniform, and get changed into their sports uniform just before lunch time. After lunchtime (which is slightly shorter than normal), the children will meet with their sports teams and head by bus to the various sites at which their sport is played (please note: none of the sports are played at Tūtira Ashgrove School). Parents and Caregivers are welcome to watch and support their children playing their sports.

Cross Country

On Monday 19 May, as part of our Health and PE programme, we will be holding our school Cross Country. Over the coming weeks, the children will be training and practicing for the 'big event'. If you are able to support and cheer on the children at the race, we would love to see you there.

Term 1 Artworks

In Term 1 the Māhuri team worked on a unit of learning called ‘All About Me’. Through this unit we learnt about ourselves and about the other members of our classes and the Hub. A big part of the learning involved the children making a variety of artworks about themselves. These artworks are now on display throughout the Hub. If you have a chance before or after school, please feel free to come in and have a look at the fantastic work the children have created.

Library Books

We love visiting the library and getting books out each week. We would really appreciate if your child can look after these books and bring them back the following week to return to the library.

There is an increasing number of students having overdue books and loosing books. Reminder notices are automatically sent out if your child's book is overdue. Please take the time to look for this book with your child at home and/or in the classroom. Please do not return email to the notice and request that the school looks for the book - it is your child's responsibility to return the books. If books are not returned, your child will not be able to get anymore books out and if lost, will have to pay for the item. We appreciate your support on teaching your child to look after the borrowed items they get.

Getting in Touch with Teachers

As always, please don't hesitate to contact us or make time to come in and meet with us if you have any questions, concerns, or information to pass on (or something nice to say!).

We are usually available before and after school, however, we do ask, that if you need more than a few minutes you make time to meet with your child’s homeroom teacher.
